It is assumed they also inhaled these oils by smudging the herbs. When authorities caught and arrested these guys, the thieves disclosed the formula of herbs, spices, and oils they used to protect themselves in exchange for a more lenient sentence. Documentation of this can be found in the Dictionary of Medical Science, dated 1873, found in the Library of Congress, written by R. Dunglison, M.D.; among other sources.
